While traditional RDBMS systems work well for operating the transactions of a business, they are just not well suited for the requirements placed on them by reporting and analytics applications.  These applications require the database to bring back huge volumes of data all at once, potentially for a large number of users.

SAS recognized this and created SAS Intelligence Storage (a.k.a. SAS Scalable Performance Data Server (SPDS)).  This storage architecture is designed to specifically address the differences in data storage and retrieval that reporting and analytics systems require, all the while using less disk storage and providing for robust security.

SPDS contains the following key features:

  • A Scalable, multithreaded, multi-I/O relational storage system
  • A "Reduced overhead" client-server database management system
  • A multithreaded, scalable and open multidimensional database
  • A technology suite enabling interoperability through open standards
